English Language and Literature


Students choose a track based on what they wish the focus of their studies to be, including the topic of their Master’s thesis.

Literary and Cultural Studies

It covers the following areas:

  • Literatures written in English, primarily those written by authors from the United Kingdom, United States, Ireland, Canada, and Australia.
  • The cultures and histories of English-speaking countries, focusing on the countries of the United Kingdom, United States, Ireland, Canada, and Australia.

Linguistics

It covers the following areas:

  • The synchronic and/or diachronic analysis of aspects of the English language.
  • Comparative analysis of specific aspects of English and another language on either a synchronic or diachronic basis.
  • Analysis of literary translations from English into Czech.

Non-literary translation does not fall within the purview of this degree program. Students interested in pursuing studies in this area should apply for admission to the Master’s degree program English-language Translation.

 

Teaching English Language and Literature for Secondary Schools


ATTENTION: Students who began their studies on Autumn 2018 or later must choose the ELT track!
Students choose a track based on what they wish the focus of their studies to be, including the topic of their Master’s thesis.Double-subject students must complete the English Language Teaching track. Single-subject students may chose any of the three tracks listed below.

Literary and Cultural Studies

It covers the following areas:

  • Literatures written in English, primarily those written by authors from the United Kingdom, United States, Ireland, Canada, and Australia.
  • The cultures and histories of English-speaking countries, focusing on the countries of the United Kingdom, United States, Ireland, Canada, and Australia.

Linguistics

It covers the following areas:

  • The synchronic and/or diachronic analysis of aspects of the English language.
  • Comparative analysis of specific aspects of English and another language on either a synchronic or diachronic basis.
  • Analysis of literary translations from English into Czech.

English Language Teaching

It covers the following areas:

  • Methodology of teach English as a foreign language
  • Testing and examination methodology
  • Teaching anglophone literatures and cultures in secondary schools

 

Non-literary translation does not fall within the purview of this degree program. Students interested in pursuing studies in this area should apply for admission to the Master’s degree program English-language Translation.
