10:00-10:55 Translating Song Texts: Between Theory and Practice

The lecture discusses the problem of translating song texts and the related concept of singability; the discussion addresses the questions concerning the definition of a text, the polarity between translation and adaptation and the problems of singability seen as the main constraint.

11:00-12:00 Opera Surtitling: An Uncharted Mode of AVT

The lecture presents the mode of opera surtitling in more detail by addressing some of the most fundamental aspects of the mode, such as the differences and similarities between subtitling and surtitling, prescriptive guidelines of good surtitling practice, or surtitling and modern dress staging.

Thursday, 24 March, 8:00-9:30, G24: Constraints in the Process of Translation

The lecture discusses the problem of constraints in translation, gives an overview of how the concept has been treated by translation scholars and presents a typology of nine constraints developed by the author, following her to date research.

The lecture gives a general overview of the development of the discipline of TS in Poland and presents the key figures and theories advanced by them.
