Stage Reading of Shakespeare's Lost Play
A few pictures from the English-Czech stage reading of Lewis Theobald’s Double Falsehood which took place on 17 December 2025 at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. The reading was done by the students of the course English Renaissance Theatre: Shakespeare and his Contemporaries, who provided the event with a truly international cast from the Czech Republic, Germany, Portugal and Turkey. The reading was accompanied by new music, composed for the event, as well as several original early-modern songs. Theobald’s play is an adaptation of a lost tragicomedy by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher titled Cardenio, which was based on an episode from Cervantes’s Don Quixote. This was the first production of the play in the Czech Republic. The first ever Czech translation of Double Falsehood will be available soon in the third volume of the Student Editions of English Renaissance Drama series, published by Masaryk University Press.
