Doctoral Studies

No description

Our doctoral programmes take four years, so that the standard length of study is 8 semesters. Students have to obtain at least 240 credits.

The Department of English and American Studies offers the following programmes:

  • English Linguistics (form: prezenční or combined)
  • Literatures in English (form: prezenční or combined)

(Please find detailed information on completing your studies under each programme description.)

English Linguistics

The programme develops the students’ knowledge in linguistic disciplines and prepares the students for independent research, especially in the areas of functional syntax, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, stylistics, and translation studies. A student learns about methods of linguistic research, and applies them during the work on his/her dissertation.

Literatures in English

The focus of the field on specialization in one of the four main areas (British and Irish literature, North American literature, Australian and New Zealand literature, other English literature) reflects the latest developments by emphasizing a deeper insight into interdisciplinary and transnational approaches (including ethnic, gender, postcolonial, regionalistic etc.). All supervisors and teachers in the doctoral program are involved in research, either in research projects or in their own scientific work, as evidenced by their publications, participation in international conferences, and in cooperation with foreign universities in the framework of exchange and other agreements.
Foreign experts are invited to take part in the teaching and other activities of the field which is an additional guarantee of updating the field studies as well as supported study and research stays of doctoral students at foreign universities. Students are actively encouraged to spend part of their doctoral studies abroad on study or research stays.
